Top 5 Problems of Internet Marketing Newbies

Being an internet marketing newbie is the toughest place to be. We are in the world’s most competitive market. So don’t despair if you don’t get there immediately. These are some common problems that we face everyday.

1) Traffic no enough.
This has to be the number 1 complaint of all newbies, I guess. When you have a new site, you want to be indexed by the major search engines. Then after you are indexed, you are still not happy because when you do a Google search, your site is found on page 194 for your main keyword, and you don’t get any organic traffic.

To get organic traffic, you need links from sites with some page-ranks. And that’s where all your hard work begins. You need to get busy submitting to article directories, site directories, social network, put up classified ads, post in forums, exchange links, buy links….you get the idea.

2) Content no enough.
Where do you find things to write about if you are not an expert in that field? That’s one thing. And supposedly you managed to find enough stuff to blog about everyday, how do you overtake those granddaddy sites that have been around for 5 years or longer, and have hundreds of indexed pages? You can try to ‘cheat’ by syndicating content, but seriously I don’t think that’s a long term strategy. Some say that it is a matter of finding out what your readers want to read and give it to them. Don’t be upset if you don’t know what they want, I’m trying to figure out that one too :-)

3) Time no enough
Is it any wonder that time is not enough? Not only you have to update your blog with fresh content, you need to do all you can to drive traffics, look for products to sell, and even plan your business. Ever since i got on the internet marketing bandwagon, my newspapers have been piling high, the dust on my furniture are also getting thicker…as i have no time to clear them.

I have found these tools quite handy in saving my time to do everything. My favorite: Roboform. Be prepared to fill up tons of forms in this business. This little toolbar saves all my logon password securely and fills up forms automatically. You know how some silly website will force you to re-submit the entire form again if you miss out one entry? My little Roboform will come to the rescue will just a click of the button…

Another great tool is Brad Callen’s free article submitter. It listed out about 80 article directories in terms of page rank and Alexa ranking, and cut down my time in manually submitting articles. I like it that it keeps a record of what has been submitted all on one page, so that I can keep track of my submission. The free directory submittor does the same thing for directory submission to 350 directories.

4) Focus no enough.
In internet marketing, everyone is trying to sell everyone else something. Just Google for free stuff and I get an avalanche of free newsletters, ebooks, articles and software to download. Everyday, it is a tough job fending off the temptations to buy, buy, buy… And the more you are distracted by all these offers, the less time you have to get any work done.

5) Money no enough
Of course the last problem has to be the lack of money. Why are we here if we don’t need some? The paradox of internet marketing is that you need to spend before you can earn. I have not heard of any newbies that can start an online business without spending any money. For me, I always try to minimise my spending by using free resources if I can. But there are some basic necessities that you have to spend on, such as domain names, web-hosting, internet connection…That’s why you should keep your day job (no matter how boring it is) to fund your online business. The gurus will advise you to quit only after your online income match your day job pay.

I know its human nature to go for easy money, but be very wary of get-rich-quick scams. They will empty out your wallet before you can blink. How do I know whether it is a scam? I’ll usually just google for the product or its review and that should give me some idea.

Marketing Online Secret: 5 Ways to Save a Huge Chunk of Money on your Online Start-up

If you are nearly dead-broke, you will love the tips here to save you money on your new start-up. Don’t spend a dime before you have read this post!

1) Domain
To get started, you’ll need to register for a domain name. You can get domain names from godaddy.com at $6.95 or you can get it cheaper. The good news is Yahoo is now having a promotion - domain name at only $1.99! Grab one before the offer expires.
Register your domain at Yahoo! Only $1.99/1st yr.

2) Free website hosting
Hosting of domains typically cost at least $40 to $100 a year. Two ways you can save on that:
Use a free blog such as wordpress or blogger.
If you only need a simple web-site, go for free hosting at freewebs.com. You url will appear as www.freewebs.com/yourname. But not to worry, you can easily forward your registered domain name to point to your freewebs account. The only catch is that they’ll put up an ad-banner on your web-page and that’s about it. If you can live with that, that’s one great way to save on web-hosting!

3) Payment facilities
If you are selling stuff, you will need to have some payment facilities to bill your customers. Shopping carts typically cost a few hundred dollars. To save on that, register for a clickbank account which accepts credit cards. Account activation costs only $49.95 and you pay them a small commission when somebody buys. The other advantage of using clickbank is that they have an affiliate program. Hence, what you get is an army of sales force to promote your products as an affiliate by offering them a cut of your profit. If you don’t need the affiliate part, then go for Paypal, which provides free registration.

4) Use free auto responder
To get customers to ‘opt-in’ to your mailing list, you’ll need an auto responder. For a start, I recommend www.freeautobot.com for its ad-free and absolutely FOC auto responder. Pay for a more sophisticated system when your web-site has grown and you have a larger mailing list.

5) Free traffic
You can pay for traffic or you can get them free by doing some work. Once your website is up, submit it to all the major search engines (Yahoo, Google, MSN, Lycos, etc). Learn about meta tags descriptions and keywords and make sure that your website has included these.
Get others to link to your websites. For a start, you can offer a one-for-one link exchange with other webmasters. It helps to improve your search rankings!
Oh, and do you know that you can monitor your traffic for free? A great tool that I personally recommend is statcounter.com. It generates free traffic analysis reports on all your webpages.
